FAQ

Do I need a parking permit for the moving van?
If you are moving to the Town Centre, Bancroft, or streets near the Train Station (like Nightingale Road or Walsworth Road), you will almost certainly be in a Controlled Parking Zone (CPZ).

Action: You may need to apply for a "Parking Dispensation" from North Herts Council to allow your removal van to stay in a permit-only bay or on a yellow line while loading. Timeline: You should apply at least 5 working days in advance through the North Herts Council website. This prevents your movers from getting a ticket while carrying your sofa!

What is the best time to schedule my move?
Hitchin is a major commuter hub, and its historic road layout means "bottlenecks" are a daily reality—especially around the A505 and A602.
The "Three Bridges" Squeeze: Traffic around the railway bridges and the Paynes Park roundabout peaks heavily between 7:30 AM – 9:15 AM and 4:45 PM – 6:15 PM.

Our Advice: Aim for a 10:00 AM start. This avoids the "school run" chaos near the many town-center schools and ensures your van isn't sitting idle in the queue coming off the A1(M) at Junction 8.

What is the maximum number of vans you can provide?
We are able to supply up to four Luton capacity type vans to accommodate your moving needs.

Do you offer storage solutions?

Do you offer a disposal service for unwanted items?
Yes, we can arrange disposal services for any unwanted items identified during your move, upon request. We have added this service as we find whilst moving customers have many unwanted items usually from there loft, garage or shed or maybe due to downsizing.

  Hitchin Town

Hitchin has a charm that’s hard to beat, blending over a millennium of history with a creative, modern energy. Tucked against the rolling Chiltern Hills with the River Hiz winding through its center, the town is all about cobbled streets, independent makers, and a real sense of belonging.

It looks like a postcard with its medieval layout and timber-framed buildings around the Market Place, but Hitchin is far from a museum piece. Whether you're wandering through the famous lavender fields or exploring the local shops, it’s the kind of place that feels both historic and full of life.

Moving to Hitchin

Hitchin is often described as having a "village heart with a town’s lungs," characterized by distinct pockets that cater to various lifestyles, from historic cottage living to leafy suburban retreats and surrounding rural hamlets.

Pick Your "Side" of the Town
Whether you’re looking for a Georgian townhouse, a cozy Victorian terrace, or a modern eco-home, Hitchin’s neighborhoods and surrounding villages offer a rich architectural tapestry.

  • The Historic Heart (Medieval Center): Centered around St Mary’s Church—the largest parish church in the county—this area is a maze of narrow alleys and Grade II-listed buildings. Living here means having the Sun Street independent shops and the regular outdoor markets right on your doorstep.
  • The Victorian Quarter (West Hitchin): Highly sought after for its characterful red-brick terraces and villas, the streets around Bearton Road and Nightingale Road offer a classic aesthetic. It’s a community-driven area where the "front garden culture" is very much alive.
  •
  • The Southern Heights (Pinehill & Beyond): For those seeking more space and greenery, the southern reaches of the town offer larger detached homes and quiet cul-de-sacs. This area feels more secluded, bordering open countryside while remaining within a short walk of the town's amenities.

The Satellite Villages
For those who want the Hitchin lifestyle with a more rural, "off-the-beaten-path" feel, the surrounding villages offer deep historical roots and a slower pace of life.

  • Ickleford (The Northern Gateway): Practically an extension of the town but with its own clear identity, Ickleford is defined by its two village greens and the River Oughton. It is home to the Plume of Feathers pub and the famous Ickleford Cricket Club, known locally as "The Tigers."

  • Pirton (The Castle & Legend): A few miles northwest, Pirton feels like a leap back in time. It is famous for Toot Hill, the remains of a 12th-century motte-and-bailey castle. The village is steeped in folklore, including the legend of a headless horseman who supposedly rides toward the town center once a year.

  • Great Offley (The High Ridge): Perched on a high chalk ridge, this village is famously said to be "two coats colder" than the valley floor. Named after King Offa of Mercia, it offers panoramic views of the countryside and is home to the grand Offley Place and traditional pubs like The Green Man.

  • Preston (The Temple & Tradition): This small, prestigious village is dominated by Temple Dinsley, a manor with historic links to the Knights Templar. It boasts a strong community spirit, evidenced by The Red Lion—the first community-owned pub in the country—and the natural amphitheatre of Bunyan’s Dell.

3. Navigating Life in the Town

Hitchin is a town that celebrates the "local," with a calendar full of festivals and facilities that encourage getting outdoors and getting involved.

  • The Purple Horizon: Just on the outskirts lies Hitchin Lavender. In the summer months, the hills turn a vivid violet, offering a sensory experience that draws visitors from across the country.

  • The Independent Spirit: Unlike many modern centers, Hitchin has successfully resisted the "clone town" trend. Sun Street and Bucklersbury are packed with award-winning butchers, independent bookshops, and Cafe like the The Groundworks.

  • Academic Excellence: Education is a cornerstone of the community. The town is home to the prestigious Hitchin Boys’ School and Hitchin Girls’ School, both of which have storied histories and consistent reputations for high achievement.
  •
Local Tip: For the best view in town, grab a coffee and head to the top of Windmill Hill at dusk. Also, keep an eye out for the "Hitchin Festival" in July—the entire town transforms into a stage for art, music, and theater.
